Labrador Berries

I started picking berries because of how they made me feel. The better I felt, the more I wanted. Before long, I was harvesting more berries than I could eat, so I started selling the surplus. That gave me the opportunity to buy a boat and explore the Labrador coastline, hiking remote islands in search of new berry patches like a hungry gold miner.

Everywhere I travelled, I met lifelong berry pickers. Many could out pick me with ease. They shared stories of how they began, taught me how to read the land, and passed on knowledge that can only be learned through years on the land. Nine years later, those lessons have become part of who I am. Today I harvest alongside my children and purchase berries from some of the finest berry pickers from Blanc-Sablon to Nain, with a particular focus on the Strait of Belle Isle.
